Peter Marchel has 24 years of experience in developing Executive Liability (D&O), Employment Liability (EPL) and Errors and Omissions (E&O) programs for clients in all types of industries. With experience both as a broker and in-house counsel and General Counsel for insurance companies and insurance brokerages, Peter brings a unique and valuable perspective to his clients. His expertise includes policy language, structuring program audits, and development of financial risk solutions. He uses his knowledge in assisting clients with placement of their policies as well as providing advice in claims situations. His experience with insurance opinions ranges from work as a former law clerk to a State Supreme Court Justice to arguing insurance cases before the court on behalf of both defendants and plaintiffs as a trial attorney.

Peter has developed D&O programs for over 150 different publically traded companies in the United States and Canada. Prior to becoming involved in the production side of the insurance business, Peter was Senior Vice President and Claims Advocate for Marsh & McLennan. He was Assistant General Counsel and Director of the Professional Liability, Risk Management and Litigation Department and in charge of all litigation in North America at Sedgwick, Inc. prior to their acquisition by Marsh & McLennan. Until joining Sedgwick, Peter worked in the corporate legal and litigation departments of SAFECO Insurance Company, where his responsibilities included oversight of bad faith and RICO litigation against the company in the corporate department and assisted in the management of five regional legal departments, implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) within the trial department, and carrying a full trial case load in the litigation department.

Education and Industry Certification

Peter holds numerous insurance designations (RPLU, CPCU, AIM, and AIS)* He earned a Certificate in Total Quality Management from the University of Washington, and received his Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) and Master of Management (MBA) in business, government and not-for-profit management, along with a Certificate in Dispute Resolution from Willamette University. He earned his BA from the University of Washington with majors in political science and communications. Peter serves or has served on the Board of Directors for the local CPCU Chapter and Association of Corporate Counsel professional organizations.

Professional affiliation and other experience

During the past 24 years, Peter has participated in or presented dozens of times to local, regional and national organizations such as: ABA (American Bar Association); ACC (Association of Corporate Counsel); Washington State Bar Association; PLUS (Professional Liability Underwriting Society); CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriting Society); FEI (Financial Executive International); National Business Institute; Segal Graduate School of Business, Simon Fraser University; NACD (National Association of Corporate Directors); and the Directors’ Roundtable. Peter has also taught Finance, Investments and Insurance Law at the College level at Crichton College, where he served as an adjunct professor.
